Turkey, in parallel with its recent economic growth, has become world’s one
of the fastest growing energy markets. By handing over the energy distribution
to the private sector and with further privatization, energy sector in Turkey
has reached a highly competitive state.
In parallel with the fast growth, Turkey’s energy demand continuing its increase and it is estimated that by 2023, it will increase approximately %7 per annum. For this reason, Turkey is in constant struggle to include more and more of the existing local energy sources back into the economy and also trying to focus on renewable energy sources. While Turkey is rich with energy resources such as water, wind, solar, geothermal and few others, their share in the national grid is very low. Because of this, Turkey’s focus has recently started to lean towards coal-fired and nuclear power plants. On the other hand, Turkey aims to become the center of the natural gas market by using its advantageous geopolitical position.
According to Turkey’s 2023 Vision, some ambitious goals are to be expected. Among them:
-Increasing the existing power up to 120,000 MW
-Increasing the share of renewable energy sources to %30
-Increasing the usage of hydroelectric sources to the maximum possible amount
-Increasing the existing wind energy capacity to 20,000 MW
-Building geothermal power plants with 600 MW and solar power plants with 3,000 MW capacity
-Extending the transmission line length to 60,717 km
-Increasing the energy distribution unit capacity to 158,460 MVA
-Increasing the natural gas storage capacity to 5 million m3
-Creating energy stock market
-Commissioning the nuclear power plants (opening two nuclear power plants for production and continuing the construction of another)
-Building a coal-fired power plant with 18,500 MW capacity
