Energy and Natural Resources

In the past 15 years, Turkey has become the country with fastest energy demand increase among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries. Located in an area with seventy percent of the proven petroleum and natural gas reserves of the world, Turkey is one of the largest natural gas and electricity markets in its region.

The key elements of Turkey's energy strategy could be summed up as follows:

1. Prioritizing activities related to energy security, while taking into account the increasing demand and import dependency,

2. Paying attention to environmental concerns in the context of sustainable development at every stage of the energy chain,

3. Creating a transparent and competitive market by ensuring necessary reform and liberalization, increasing productivity and efficiency,

4. Increasing R&D studies related to energy technologies.

In this framework, Turkey aims to;

.Diversify the sources and routes in the supply of its imported hydrocarbon resources,

.Include Nuclear Energy in its energy resources,

.Increase the share of domestic and renewable energy,

.Increase energy efficiency.

Turkey, based on its goals for combatting the climate change, reducing dependence on foreign energy and maximizing the use of local resources, is continuing its efforts to increase the share of renewable energy sources in the national energy composition and to add nuclear energy to the energy basket. In addition to installed capacity, production and exploration and well-drilling activities, energy efficiency is also one of the most emphasized topics in the field of energy. Turkey aims to save 30 billion dollars by 2033, by investing over 10 billion dollars in energy efficiency until 2023, thus reducing the primary energy consumption by 14 percent in 2023.
